PC & Mobile Search By Time Of Day

March 31, 2011 • Article by Dan Fallon

Two weeks ago I was invited to  a day of lectures at Google HQ in London called Insights 2011. Today in the office we were discussing volumes of search by hour across the day and I remembering seeing this chart. I shared it with the team and thought it also of broader interest (hence the blog).

Google internal chart showing PC & Mobile Search Across A Typical Day from Insights Day March 2011

Google’s point was that it showed the increased importance of mobile search in the evening and how it complements daytime desk based search. Interestingly mobile search roughly also mirrors a classic TV daypart viewing chart. While I know that some people sit on their sofas Googling brands they have just seen on the TV I dont believe this is the primary driver. The evening spike in mobile search is presumably a combination of sofa surfing, young people in their bedrooms & people out & about planning their evenings.
